Postdoctoral researcher position in Geobiology on the ‘Interactions between metals and carbonaceous materials in Archean cherts’

A postdoctoral researcher position in Geobiology is offered at the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (IPGP). The position will focus on transition metal distribution and precipitation processes in Archean carbonaceous cherts. The researcher will study stable metal isotope fractionation and crystal structures of metal oxides associated with carbonaceous material. The aim of this work is to generate a better understanding of the preservation potential of remnant biomass in the presence of dissolved metals and crystalline metal oxides during hydrothermal circulation and regional metamorphism. The study will form an important basis for the identification of organic microfossils found in Archean cherts.


The researcher will be part of the group ‘Geomicrobiology’ at IPGP in Paris. This group houses a fully equipped microbiology laboratory and a high-pressure, high-temperature experimental laboratory. IPGP has recently created a state of the art analytical platform that includes a Raman spectrometer, FTIR-spectrometer, CLSM, SEM, FIB-SEM, and (laser ablation-)MC-ICP-MS. Our team also has access to NanoSIMS and TEM facilities at nearby institutes. During the course of this postdoctoral research project several of these analytical facilities will be extensively used. The successful candidate is motivated and ambitious, has a Ph.D. degree in Geochemistry, Earth Sciences or a related field, with an interdisciplinary background in both biogeochemistry and mineralogy. The ideal candidate has a strong background in non-traditional isotope analyses by MC-ICP-MS (e.g., of Fe, Zn, Cu, Mo, Cr or Ti), including development of ion-exchange chromatographic purification protocols and preparation of double spikes. Experience with Raman spectroscopy and other high-resolution imaging techniques is a plus. Requirements are a broad interest in the biogeochemistry of modern extreme environments, and the origin and evolution of early life. The candidate should be fluent in English and have a willingness to travel, carry out field work in remote areas, and interact in a strongly interdisciplinary team.


We offer a full-time postdoctoral position for 12 months, renewable for 12 months based on reasonable progress. The selected candidate will be employed by IPGP in Paris, following French labour laws. Remunerations will be subject to French income tax.
