I am a geochemist interested by the Earth’s surface processes and the way they play a role in the geochemical cycles of elements. I have been focusing mostly of chemical potamology, i.e. the geochemistry of rivers as a way to understand the global role of chemical weathering in the Earth’s chemical engine. River average Earth’s surface processes and are messengers of the water-air-rock interaction participating in the formation of the Earth’s Critical Zone, the thin pellicle at the surface of our planet where life has developed and where humans live. I have been involved in the Critical Zone Initiative, a worldwide research initiative aiming at building a network of watershed observatories, as platforms of interdisciplinary collaboration. I am in charge of the French Critical Zone infrastructure program OZCAR. I am also coordinating the national Equipement of Excellence program CRITEX https://www.critex.fr/, for the development of new instruments for exploring the Critial Zone (started in 2011 for 10 years).
My tools are elemental and isotopic geochemistry. My group and I have developed or have participated to the development of several techniques for measuring precise isotopic abundances in natural materials (B, Li, Zn, Mg) and applied these techniques to study rainwater, river water, soils, sediments, rocks. I have been involved in the adventure of using boron isotopes in carbonates as a tracer of paleo-pH of the ocean. More recently, I got interested in using isotopes to trace pollution.
