The Bronze Medal rewards a researcher’s first work, which establishes him or her as a talented specialist in his or her field. This award represents encouragement from the CNRS to pursue research that is well under way and already fruitful.

The seismic waves that propagate during an earthquake do not stop at the ground: they are felt all the way to the upper atmosphere. Elvira Astafyeva, a researcher at the IPGP, is studying the response to earthquakes of the ionosphere, the atmospheric layer that protects us from solar radiation. She hopes to develop new tools for studying the movements of the lithosphere. Her research could also lead to the creation of a tsunami warning tool.

Elvira Astafyeva holds a doctorate from the Institute of Solar and Terrestrial Physics in Irkutsk. Between 2007 and 2012, she completed two post-doctorates in Japan and at the IPGP in France. Recruited by the CNRS in 2012, she was awarded an ERC grant to continue her research into the ionosphere and ionospheric seismology, i.e. the spatial detection of earthquakes and tsunamis, as well as volcanic eruptions.
